New fund provides $5.5 million to develop solutions for food, housing, healthcare, and safety services for Chicago residents
The Resilient Chicago Fund, a philanthropic collaborative co-chaired by The Chicago Community Trust and the MacArthur Foundation, has awarded $5.5 million in its first grant cohort to 17 social safety net projects. A centerpiece of the funding is a 'Food is Medicine' initiative that helps community organizations like Dion’s Chicago Dream build the data infrastructure and inventory tracking needed to qualify for Medicaid 1115 Waiver reimbursements.
HNH Insight
This initiative represents a strategic shift in philanthropy from direct service funding to building technical 'interoperability' for the Food is Medicine sector. By funding platforms that unify intake, delivery tracking, and outcome reporting, this grant directly addresses the 'documentation gap' that has historically prevented community-based food organizations from successfully billing healthcare payers and health plans.
